Posted by Ralf Yoffe | Under Commentary, Company Profiles, Economy & Government, Special Reports, Taxes Saturday Apr 26, 2008Nobody wants a partisan tax blogger. It’s so… impolitic, if you will. So, I’m not going to offer any real commentary about the election on yesterday in terms of winners and losers. You can do your own Wednesday morning quarterbacking.
That said, the face of the House has changed drastically with the loss of 27 seats by the GOP and a pickup of 28 seats by the Dems (the Independents lost a seat). The House now has its first female House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi of California, and she vows that things are going to be different. And what kind of “things” is she talking about? Well, taxes, for one. With a nod to the tax cuts passed under a GOP Congress a few years ago, she said, “We will revisit the tax cuts at the high end in order to give tax cuts to the middle class.”

“When I Grow Up, I Want to Be a Tax Attorney!”
Posted by Ralf Yoffe | Under Business, Careers, Commentary, International, Money Matters, Retirement Tuesday Apr 22, 2008Okay, so I didn’t really say that when I was a kid. But I did come close. I did know that I wanted to be a lawyer and I wanted to work in international matters. And it was clearly fated. My great-grandmother, who lived in Greenville, SC told everyone that I talked like a Philadelphia lawyer. And here I am, a Philadelphia lawyer (lesson learned, listen to your elders).
In honor of Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day on April 24, the Business Channel is asking our readers to think about how our experiences as children influence our career choices. From April 1 to April 20, I am asking you to post a comment about this idea of what you want to be when you grow up… At the end of the month, you may be entered to win a gift card to Barnes and Noble for $25.

Elections are supposed to be about candidates. And candidates want endorsements. But not every organization is allowed to make a public endorsement of a political candidate. Specifically, organizations that are tax-exempt - including churches, schools and purely public charities - may not endorse candidates, raise funds for candidates or distribute statements for or against candidates.
The IRS has, in prior years, warned tax-exempt organizations about the kinds of activities which are acceptable - and those that are not. In 2006, the Service was particularly proactive following a slew of complaints stemming from the 2004 presidential elections.

I’m adding this link to the Net Neutrality Page.
Is Net Neutrality A Myth? [via Light Within]
The advocates of net neutrality have, at first blush, one overwhelming argument in their favor. The Internet was designed to be a dumb network, with all the brains and innovation residing at the ends of the system. As such, all bits of data traveling over the Internet would be treated equally. This “end-to-end” design principle is the essence of network neutrality and, the proponents of mandated net neutrality argue, must be maintained to secure the Internet as we know it.

Posted by Ralf Yoffe | Under Company Profiles, Investing, Money Matters, Technology Friday Apr 18, 2008With so many web 2.0 startups running around with too many consonants in their name, it's hard for a traditional software startup to get some of the buzz that yet another youtube clone might. Today I am profiling Packet Analytics which provides a NetFlow search engine.
Packet Analytics is a startup based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The company has an exclusive technology license from Los Almos National Labs for their proprietary NetFlow search engine. Given the high security demands of the nuclear weapons lab, this product has seen far more testing and usage than a typical software startup. Most software startups don't have their software running for 5 years at a customer's facility, much less a high profile one like Los Alamos. This means for an enterprise looking for a NetFlow analysis tool can know that the software can perform up to standards that far exceed their own. (If you don't know what NetFlow is, please read my link to the Wikipedia article.)

Posted by Ralf Yoffe | Under Company Profiles, Economy & Government, Marketing, U.S. Markets Thursday Apr 17, 2008Global expansion is something large corporations do all the time. It's also good idea for any affiliate marketer to consider. I recently launched a Canadian shopping portal, a Faire du shopping which is a French shopping portal. That's not all either.
I also re-launched my UK shopping portal and my UK Auction Portal. There are some very good reasons for this, not the least of which is that the dollar has steeply declined in value. Ron Paul nuts not withstanding I look at the dollar's decline as potentially quite a good thing since everything in the United States is cheaper including PPC. Buying clicks in dollars and getting paid in Euros is one more opportunity to leverage an arbitrage to take advantage of global markets.

I assure you the decision wasn't taken lightly, especially with a number of major launches to write about which were highly targeted to my core audience.

Posted by Ralf Yoffe | Under Currencies, Taxes Tuesday Apr 15, 2008When Congress first introduced the wacky legislation that is the current federal estate tax situation (an exemption that gradually rises to $3.5 million per person, is eliminated in the year 2010 and returns in 2011 to its "old self") most folks assumed we had plenty of time to fix it. 2010 seemed years away. Now, 2010 is a lot closer than 2001 (the year the change took effect) and we have no real plan. What should we do? So this week’s question is:
