Getting To Know You Tuesday:

Tuesday Oct 30, 2007

Remember this movie?

It was made by students Jon Chow, Dan Reich and Brittany Davies. They’re not tax professionals (they’re students) but their movie made me laugh. So, I caught up with them and asked them a few questions. Enjoy!

1. Where are you now?

Brittany: 49o 16′01.16″ N , 123o 14′50.65″ W

Jonathan: What she said.

Daniel: Touring Nabraska with my heavy metal band called Guns, Knives and other weapons?

Website Hosting - Get your own site!

Monday Oct 29, 2007

Basic website hosting is one of those things that I take for granted. I have multiple options open to me since I manage and maintain my own cluster, in addition to having a significant number of shared hosting accounts for IP range diversity. I usually bring on a new host when I have a project that has specific needs in a hosting environment.

I evaluate hosting providers by opening one of their mid level hosting accounts and see how they perform. I have evaluated Hostway, Powweb, CrystalTech and Hostgator this way. Most of these hosting plans have performed up to my expectations. As a result of this testing I cannot recommend Powweb. Their servers are constantly over-loaded. I am currently reviewing the offerings on MySite.com.

Nine Things I’ve Learned While Running a Business

Sunday Oct 21, 2007

Last week, while talking during Open Comments Night, Rick Cockrum brought up some brilliant insights regarding what were the most important things he learned when starting his business. I was so taken by them I asked him on the spot if he might write a guest post about them. I’m thrilled to say he agreed! So here it is.

Nine Things I’ve Learned While Running a Business by Rick Cockrum

I usually write at Shards of Consciousness on personal growth topics, but my wife and I also own a bricks and mortar business, the Ambridge Family Theatre, one of the few independent movie theatres in left in western Pennsylvania. At one of Liz’s regular Open Comments night, Becky McCray of Small Biz Survival was talking about a series of posts she’s doing on starting a small business. I piped up about some of the things my wife and I spent a lot of time researching before we bought the theatre, and things we’re still learning.
