What Freelancing Taught Me – Part 2 Be Firm but Not Tough

Tuesday Jul 24, 2007

More from Deb Ng, who told us yesterday how to gain confidence in any freelance job.

What Freelancing Taught Me – Part 2 Be Firm but Not Tough by Deb Ng

Did you ever see a person on television or even real life who was considered “tough” in business? She could pick up the phone and get what she wants, or have employees running at her beck and call, practically sniveling at her feet. I used to work for a woman like that. I admired her so much until I realized she wasn’t tough, she was mean. People responded to her because she wasn’t a nice person and they didn’t want to be on the receiving end of her wrath.

Would a Gas Tax Holiday Help… or Hurt?

Saturday Jul 21, 2007

Both McCain (GOP) and Clinton (Dem) have called for a temporary suspension of the federal gas tax - or a gas tax holiday - for the summer in response to higher gas prices. Obama has so far not endorsed such a move.

There is currently a 18.4 cent federal tax imposed on each gallon of gasoline purchased - in addition to any state taxes. Eliminating the tax would be a relief for taxpayers, according to the candidates. But experts are warning that a tax holiday could actually push prices higher.

Managing Business Expansion

Saturday Jul 21, 2007

Managing your cashflow is one of the more difficult challenges entrepreneurs face. Most start-ups done have the necessary capital to aggressively grow. One way to do that is to look into Unsecured Business Lines of Credit, Loans, and Credit Cards.

The right business credit line will allow your business to focus on developing your product (or web site) by handling that short term cash flow crunch you face between bringing your product to market and orders. By extending your working capital you can gain additional resources to market your product or even improve the product.

How Low can the US Dollar Goes?

Despite the fact that the US dollar moved to an all-time low against the EURO on 27th February breaking the key psychological barrier of $1.50 for the first time since the 15-nation currency was launched in 1999, it seem clear that the fall is continuing.

The Blog Herald: Flying Cars Are Unlikely

Wednesday Jul 18, 2007

Did They Promise You Flying Cars Too?

When I first got to the Internet, I unconsciously tried to give everything a place, north, south, east, west. Being visual, I still find myself, thinking about people’s blogs and websites on a map of the world in my head. But that’s only half of the story.

Like any 3-D company — building and people — that I might drive to, the Internet is a place, but it’s also the people that live, work, and play every day here.

Will there be any FED Rate Cut on 30th Jan 2008?

Will there be any FED Rate Cut on 30th Jan 2008?

Posted on January 29, 2008

With hours to go before the next FOMC meeting on 30th Jan, everyone in the global financial market is waiting for US Federal Reserve official Interest Rate announcement.

All the players are guessing and speculating whether FED will continue to cut its Interest Rate further or put it on hold.

With the latest cut of three-quarters of a percentage point last week, the key short-term interest rate now stands at 3.5%. Ultimately, whether the Interest Rate remains the same, lower by 25 basis points or 50 basis points will be Bernanke and gang decision. Many analysts are saying that the cut will only be a quarter of a percentage point but the futures market is pricing a greater half percentage cut. If the equity market does not get its 50 basis points cut, it will tank. If there is no cut, it will basically mean disaster. For the currency market, regardless of who is right or wrong, one thing for sure – market volatility.

Pay to Play

Friday Jul 13, 2007

One of the most closely guarded secrets in the history of sports is about to be revealed: exactly how much does JoePa get paid?

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled that the Penn State University football coach’s salary must be made public. The request had initially been made by a newspaper (The Patriot-News in Harrisburg) to the State Employees’ Retirement System; employees enrolled in the system are covered by an open records law. The university had previously blocked attempts to make Paterno’s salary public.

Sin Taxes Hit UK

Wednesday Jul 11, 2007

I’ve posted before about sin taxes - this notion of using tax as a means of controlling or modifying behavior.

In the UK, the Chancellor delivered the new budget this week. The budget included little in the way of new or increased taxes since the UK is in the throes of many of the same financial woes that the US is experiencing. However, the few new taxes that were introduced are noteworthy: they are pure sin taxes.

The tax increases that are getting the most press currently are boosts in the prices of alcohol. The new budget calls for a 4p addition in tax for beer; 3p addition in tax for cider; 14p addition in tax for a liter of wine and a remarkable 55p for hard liquor. The rise in tax prices was contemplated as a deterrent against binge drinking. The question is whether that makes a difference in behavior.
